Thanks all for the input! Lots to think about -- this has been weighing on me all morning. And on top of the news of Chris Cornell, Roger Ailes, the Times Square horrific accident, Paul
Ryan caught on tape...I feel like my head is about to explode!
pal, you hit the nail on the head. We researched MCM cabs and this ribbed/reeded look caught our eye. We didn't want to do just walnut slab cabs, as that seemed somewhat "expected." Two of our friends are flippers of MCM homes and just installed these exact cabs. They looked very nice, but they was nothing particularly unique about them. Our goal was to do something different that was period-appropriate, but use a lighter stain. Obviously, that did not work out too well. The issue with re-staining is that our cab maker is concerned as there are 5 layers of lacquer on the existing ones. It was apparently a difficult process to stain these, with all the grooves. But we may do a sample and take that as a first step and see if we can get them to a warmer, richer color. But -- he is charging us more to re-stain than he is just to replace with all new doors.
This image is what inspired the whole endeavor to do ribbed cabs:
lyfia, the floor is already installed under the protective layers so there's no going back there.
biondanonima, the stain color was more of a blonde, with some gray undertones.
I'm not sure how it got so off track.
I'm meeting with our designer to walk through options and am weighing this out -- not only is there a cost involved, but there's a delay. Thanks again for the input and thoughts -- I would love to hear thoughts on options if we do keep (paint? if so, what color?)

Ignore the blue...the doors seem to have a small frame and then have decorative columns that make them look inset. These columns are extra big which is wasteful and clunky, but maybe we should go bigger than 1.5”?
