Yes, we've had one for 50 years. We live in a very cold climate. The woodshed is in the garage, and you put the logs through a hatch in the back of a built-in display cabinet (with doors) near to an open fireplace in the living room.
No evidence of bugs.
Bugs are not an issue if the firewood is properly cured outdoors (as it should be) or kiln-dried.
Method #2. Thousands of people around here have wood furnaces. They throw their winter wood down a hatch into the basement. They can have several cords down there.
These methods prevent you from getting freezer burn when you go to the outdoor wood pile in mid-winter.
PS Much of the fake firewood sold in store is either for getting an indoor fire started or to make a campfire. Not at all the same as a regular supply of firewood. So, fake wood is immaterial to this discussion.
