The product we use is Sun Glo. The tubing we use is Alanod. All metal low profile flashings. NO PLASTIC. Bottom mounting is metal. Trim ring is powder coated metal. Diffuser is optical dual sided prisms. Dome is 100% modified duraplex acrylic. All seals are EPDM rubber.
I think what you are referring to is Solatube. Which in my opinion has as much plastic on it as Velux.
Velux still uses alot of plastic. Bottom ring is plastic, bottom mounting ring is plastic and uses plastic tabs. Velux also promotes flexible tubing. Anyone that promotes substandard flexible tubing is not a good company in my book.
But back to the reason i replied to your thread.
I replied because you were misinforming the public.
Glass does not have a higher light transmission than acrylic.
Glass is not stronger than hi-impact acrylic
Velux Does use acrylic and polycarbonate domes on there sun tunnel line.
Velux does not have a 20 year warranty on there sun tunnel product line.
The only 20 year warranty is on specific glass skylights and the Alanod tubing.
Most roofs have between a 30 and 50 year warranty. So if Velux is so good, why only a 10
year warranty? Seems like the are not very confident in there product and its longevity.
If you wish to promote Velux, thats great but be honest when you do.
Also the correct terminology on the process Alanod uses is PVD. Physical Vapour Deposition
Solatube uses 3m which is a MPF or Multi polymeric Film. Yes i have seen Solatube tubing delaminate and yellow. An occurrence that wont happen with Alanod.
I have sold and installed almost every tubular skylight on the market for the last 20 years.
