Designer Showcase: Tineke Triggs
I am delighted to be writing an Ideabook this week showcasing the work of designer Tineke Triggs, who I enjoyed catching up with recently. I met Tineke several years ago while living in San Francisco, when we were both taking some time off from our work, having just become new mothers. It has been a pleasure to watch her career in interior design flourish since then, as this was a field she had just begun to pursue during that time. While on leave she helped a friend renovate a home, as well as began work on a home of her own. That is the kind of energy and enthusiasm she brings to her work. How many people do you know that manage to set the stage for a new career while on maternity leave?
Fast forward eight years and she is now the owner of Artistic Designs For Living, a San Francisco design firm that creates spaces that are clean yet traditional, incorporating a wonderfully fresh sense of color. While there is a focus on kitchen and bathroom design, the firm also oversees whole home renovations, putting together wonderfully designed rooms with a focus on color, quality furnishings and incorporating interesting mixes of fabrics. This has led to a new venture developing a line of green, customizable furniture, which will be called Tineke Designs. I can't wait to see this line, but in the meantime, here are examples of the work recently completed by Artistic Designs For Living.

I just had to ask about this laundry room with its green cabinetry. Tineke says she encourages her clients to incorporate color, often suggesting it be used less public spaces if that is what they are comfortable with. In this case, the client loves the result so much that the laundry room has become her favorite space in the house.
It should come as no surprise that Tineke has a minor in Art. This becomes evident when seeing the use of art in her designs and observing how the color and patterns seen in a piece can set the stage for a design. While this living room is full of pattern, it still feels serene. The green in one canvas is repeated in the drapes, pillows, a band of trim on the lampshade and in the floral arrangement. The blues are repeated in a large scale rug, which grounds the space, becoming a highlight of the design.
The use of color and mix of fabrics within this space is fantastic. When done right, mixing a wide range of fabrics produces a dynamic aspect to a design, and looks effortless. But accomplishing this is much harder than it appears. The key is the proper mix of scale with a common element shared among the choices.
Here is another image of the room which I included to showcase the custom headboard. What is better than seeing a bit of Imperial Trellis in Mandarin on a headboard with an accent of nail head trim? The addition of pillows and a bedskirt made with a coordinating orange and an ivory stripe detail are the perfect compliment to the headboard. Simple but striking.
Orange, pink and white, what a sweet combination for a girl's room. I used this same Lock fabric in Hot Pink on the drapes in Isabella's room, and how charming it is on these matching twin headboards. A pink wall behind the headboards could have become overpowering, but does not due to all the white included in the design, most notably the white duvets with their graphic orange striped detailing.
Then there are the kitchens. I suggest you check out the Artistic Design For Living website to see more of the firm's kitchen designs. My favorite part of this design? The chalkboard covered door fronts, adding both a fun and functional element to the kitchen.
While this is a long narrow kitchen, the work space at the far end of the room as well as the island in the foreground provide function. The addition of the warm tones on the upper cabinets above the stove and the surface lining the island bring in contrast and warmth.
Powder bathrooms are truly one of the most fun rooms to decorate with a license to be creative! Here the highlights are the shimmering wallpaper, light fixture and vanity. Tineke pays special attention to the craftmanship and design of the cabinetry used in her projects. Notice not only the unusual color but how the door design mirrors the lines seen on the light fixture. It is this attention to detail that sets a design apart.
More unexpected color. While the major surfaces remain neutral and timeless, color is introduced through elements that can more easily be changed. Here yellow is brought in with paint, a trim detail on the roman shade and in the print used on pillows.
This dining area boasts more striking color, the purple, pinks and lavender accents are surprising in such a modern space...
The craftmanship seen on the cabinetry in this bathroom is outstanding. It features a detailed door design and legs that raise the cabinets up from the floor, creating the appearance of furniture. And then all the mirrors lined with beautiful millwork...you would have no excuse leaving this bathroom looking anything less than fabulous!
A nice mix of classic and modern, with the modern light fixture, transitional chairs and classic artwork.
The play of grays and whites is every effective in this kitchen design. The dark gray cabinetry is balanced by the island, with its lighter tone and cabinetry detail. The marble on the island brings it all together, as does the multi-toned tile selected for the backsplash. The lighter steel gray barstools are a perfect choice, while the glass pendants bring in a reflective quality.
The subtle combination of color and pattern results in a serene and beautiful bedroom. Notice the two wall colors which are seen repeated in the artwork, lamp base, headboard fabric, and pillows.
Every component of this powder bathroom has been carefully selected. From the dark paint color to the narrow mirror, hung off center to the vanity but centered above the sink. The light fixture, set to the side, becomes the jewelry of the space.
Simple and elegant, the design of this bedroom can grow with a child for years. The capiz chandelier, Missoni print pillows, built-in bookshelves, window seat and soothing wall color are the highlights of this design.
