I remember you as funcolors about 15 years ago
Yep. That's me.
as others like, SW Pure White, Snowbound and Extra white are looking gray to me
Geeze Louise you have a good eye.
They are more chromatic, colorful in comparison to Chantilly and Super White. You're seeing it as grayness, which is fine, makes sense.
Chroma value between 0.30and 0.45. So, a color like BM Super White with a Chroma of 0.21 wouldn’t work on my north facing kitchen cabinets?
0.21 is close enough. The range is really 0.30 and 0.45 ISH. Emphasis on ISH.
The framework of color data values is exactly that, a framework; the values aren't formulaic or prescription-like so there is wiggle room.
Also, would a chroma closer to 0.30 show less gray?
The lower the Chroma number, the closer that color is to a clean, true, neutral white-white.
Chroma means you're comparing a color to a true achromatic, neutral color of the same value. For colors of white, that's a true, neutral white. Not gray.
Chantilly Lace with a chroma value of 0.27 is showing too bright in daylight but perfect at night....sigh
Okay, this might get a little complicated but stay with me.
Brightness correlates to lightness and LRV. Not chroma or grayness.
Everybody uses the word "bright" incorrectly. (keeps me employed, lol!)
So if Chantilly is too bright, you need to compare Value and/or LRV.
And guess what?
Super White has a lower LRV than Chantilly.
Super White is not as bright as Chantilly.
That means you are spot on, Super White fits in that perfect pocket of chroma and LRV for you.
The data validates exactly what you were seeing and it also confirms Super White as a good choice.
