Look 1: Classic Style in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Design challenge. Create a bathroom in a new Craftsman-style home that mimics the older, timeless feel of its early-20th-century neighborhood but that also feels updated and modernized.
Material choices. Since this is a guest bath, we did red oak on the floors; you see that look a lot in houses around there. It flows well from the bathroom into the bedroom. Then we took the ceramic subway tile all the way to the ceiling of the shower and across the back wall of the vanity to give the space a more custom look.
Color choices. Blue vanities are in right now, and the gold of the brass finishes pops off the blue in a cool way. The black mirror adds that more antique look. Darker grout increases the brown of the hexagonal tiles on the shower floor, ties in with the brass hardware and pulls in the hardwood floors.
Why that vanity? The whole look of the bath is crisp and clean. The vanity fits that well.

Look 2: Contemporary Flair in Sunnyvale, California
As told to our editor by the designer Carmit Oron
Design challenge. Convert a bathtub to a shower in a master bathroom. The plumbing was on the opposite side of the room, so all plumbing had to be flipped. The clients also asked for heated flooring and for the 24-inch entry door to be widened.
Material choices. We went with less expensive porcelain floor and wall tile to make room in the budget for high-quality fixtures. I wanted to pair the colorful vanity with a black-and-white pattern. The floor tile creates lots of interest, but to add more texture and depth, I laid the 3-by-6-inch wall tile in a herringbone pattern with a light gray grout that subtly covers the walls to the floor.
Color choices. It all started with the Kendall vanity. Once we’d picked it, we decided to pair it with the fun tile on the floor, while keeping it quiet on the walls.
Why that vanity? Its beautiful color and functional layout.
