I live in an "upside down house"; they call them reverse floor plans here. I really like it and it's necessary on my lot for privacy because we are on a pie piece lot with roads on 2 sides. However I am building a new house not this way for the following reasons. 1) You are more disconnected from the ground, which may or may not be okay depending on a lot of things. 2) It's more expensive to make a lot of outdoor space because elevated decks cost more than patios. 3) Except where you have decks or porches in front of windows, you have to hire people to clean your main windows since they are so high. 4) The entry can be tricky, having people take their shoes and coats off downstairs and then come up. 5) Most boomers around me won't buy a house where the master and main living area aren't on the main floor, unless there is an elevator, which is very expensive. Just things to consider.

Great article guys - Passive House is not only about energy but also about comfort, quietness, resilience, and longevity.

It is about a smaller footprint on the planet. Ironically the best strategy, (especially as relates to climate change) at this point is to go earth sheltered - getting protection from the very thing we are degrading. I keep wondering why there is a general aversion to earth sheltered homes.
