Kelvin doesn't measure brightness--it measures the color temperature of the light. The higher the number, the more the light looks bluer. I really like this image because it puts different temperatures side by side so you can really see the difference.
People generally like the warmer/softer/lower numbers because they're used to it from incandescent bulbs, but that doesn't mean it's the only solution!
But let's talk about how to find brightness. That's measured in lumens. The higher the number, the brighter the light. Here's a table for converting watts to lumens:
