Colleen,
For the rug I browse RugsUSA.com that has a feature that allows you to install rugs into your room.
I just use Microsoft Paint that comes on every Windows computer to add items to the room using cut and paste feature. I keep a picture library of items, probably a thousand or more, divided by categories that have plain white backgrounds. That feature allows you to add them in a transparent way. Of course sometimes the angle of the item is not correct, like the prints on the wall in the illustration below.
It takes practice and you learn things along the way, but there is no course for this as far as I know.
In addition, I use the Photos tool that came on my computer to straighten and lighten most of the badly taken photos on this forum. It seems no one can hold their phone straight. All phones allow you to use the GRID feature when you take a picture. Use it. It will make your photos instantly better.
