Your Décor: Put a Monogram on It
15 ways to leave your initials around the house
Some of you may be too young to remember Laverne and Shirley, but I always had a fascination with the way Laverne had a cursive "L" on everything she wore. It began a love of monograms for me; they started on Bermuda bag covers and still make their way onto my favorite L.L. Bean boat tote bags.
There's something very royal about monogramming items around the home. Here are some great opportunities to put your stamp in every room of the house.

1. On the back of a dining chair. When I spied this chair I immediately thought of Laverne. Using an oversized single initial on the back of a dining chair is a bold move. You could have one for each member of your family with each person's first initial on their own chair.
2. On throw pillows. What's better than one monogrammed throw pillow? Two monogrammed throw pillows.
3. On the headboard. If your kids share a room, this is a fun way to mark their territories.
4. Over the headboard. If a major trip to the upholsterer's is not in the cards, add a stencil above the headboard. This is an easy DIY project that costs very little.
6. In a frame. Preserve and enjoy an antique handkerchief, dresser scarf or doily with a monogram by framing it and hanging it on the wall.
7. On the bedroom door. A name on the door is often a design move for a child's room, but a sophisticated monogram works for adults, too.
8. On a Roman shade. The monogram on this one punctuates the fabric. I think this would look smashing with my coordinating boat tote hanging on those hooks nearby.
9. In a backsplash. If I had a castle in Scotland, I imagine the tile in my kitchen would have a wonderful cursive "H" over the range like this.
10. Over the desk. Why not admire your initial while you work? This is a great move for a kid's room, too.
11. On a lampshade. I never would have thought of this if I hadn't been searching Houzz for monograms. This is another project that can be accomplished with some skilled stenciling.
12. On the tissue box. Here's a subtle way to put your monogram in the bathroom.
13. On the back of your lush home theater seats. I admit, not a lot of us have these, but if I ever do someday, I'm going to have to monogram them.
14. On your towels. This is probably the most popular use of a monogram around the house, and it's still a good one. This is also a good chance to do something a little goofy if you want. For instance, if your name is Becky, you can monogram your towels with "Chez Beck."
15. Above the fireplace. If your room is lacking a mantle, consider adding your initial in a circle.
