My Houzz: Eclectic Vancouver Loft
Music and art warms a couple's cozy, collected space
Homeowners Matt and Josée Davis made their loft their own by filling it with "love, music and things that make us happy." Their tree-lined street in Vancouver's diverse West End neighborhood offers plenty of foliage to give their compact, densely populated area a surprisingly quiet, country feel. Double-height ceilings and an upper-level patio offer breathing room, and their décor reveals their interests in art, fashion, music and a clean, modern style.

The couple used Expedit shelving to organize their books and magazines, and as a room divider for the living and dining room spaces. The shelves create private areas in an open space without blocking too much light or making it feel closed in.

The bedroom features artwork by Jessica Joan Delorme, whose work Josée considers "intelligent, soulful, and whimsical." The bright colors in the painting are a nice contrast to the bedroom's earthy wall color. Playful accent pillows and floral patterned bedding add vintage charm to their sleeping space.

On the opposite wall, a 1970s classic Parentesi lamp is used to highlight a gallery wall. Manufactured by Flos, it was designed by Achille Castiglioni and Pio Manzu, and has been exhibited at the MoMA in New York. The spotlight is adjustable and moves up and down a weighted suspension cable. It serves as both a design and functional piece, taking up almost no space at all while providing plenty of light.

Mixing up chairs at the dining table keeps things fun and interesting. Josée told me they plan on replacing them soon, while maintaining an eclectic aesthetic. She says, "This way each chair has its own character, bringing something new and different to the table."
The pendant lamp is composed of numerous love notes written in different languages and gives the room a soft, intimate feel. Matt found the dining table through a film set decorator in Vancouver.

The sleek, clean lines and clear, open space in the hallway reflect Matt's minimalist influence on the decor. A framed, vintage illustration perched atop the storage console leaves the expansive wall space bare. The print makes a statement while contributing to an open, airy feel.

Heading upstairs to the loft, a colorful gallery wall showcases a collection of art, prints and photographs. The couple changes the composition and images often to keep things fresh.
The most recent update in the house was done by Matt, who tore out the carpet on the stairs and replaced it with wood.
The upstairs skylight floods the loft with natural light during the day. The wall sconce is an excellent choice for ambient light at night or on one of the many gray and rainy Vancouver days.

Having extra loft space is ideal for Josée who uses it as her creative studio. As a music teacher, makeup artist and most recently a perfumer, she creates innovative scent compositions and the labeled jars are part of an ongoing project inspired by her love for traveling. Josee says, "Each scent has notes that honor each place and their history as seen through my sensory experience." When asked about her favorite scent, she says, "It would have to be the Netherlands: lavender, olibanum, black agar and oak moss."
A collection of books in their loft is highlighted by an Ikea lamp.
Matt and Josée enjoy the numerous eating and shopping options within walking distance, as well as beaches and dog-friendly parks to take their Boston terrier Chica.

Josée painted the black backdrop behind the piano over a series of sunny afternoons out on the patio. Matt selected a coordinating 1967 Italian glass and marble table lamp designed by the Castiglioni brothers. Josée found the white Beethoven statue at a thrift store. Not only does she admire Beethoven's story and music, but her grandmother had the same one. The dreamcatcher is by artist and friend, Jessica Joan Delorme.
