Houzz Tour: Light, Glass and Whimsy in India
A designer increases the comfort and appeal of an extended family’s Mumbai apartment with airier spaces and striking art
This apartment needed some breathing room — larger spaces where three generations of family members could get together and relax. The clients also wanted the decor to reflect their sophisticated, cosmopolitan tastes. They turned to interior designer Prashant Chauhan of Zero9.
The apartment contained four bedrooms when it was built in 2018, but Chauhan reduced the number to three and redistributed the space. The living-dining room is bright and spacious. A large yellow sofa, combined with a designer lounge chair and round tables, makes for a comfortable space.
“The balcony is enhanced with large sliding doors that allow plenty of light inside. Plants are used to add life to the area and to make the living room visually more spacious,” Chauhan says.

Intriguing little elements are sprinkled across the room to add a touch of whimsy. “The owners trusted us completely with the furniture and furnishings, knowing it’s our forte. Most of the decor pieces and seaters are made by the Zero9 team,” Chauhan says.
Separating the living room from the study is a large grid of clear glass and metal. “We added this to keep visual connectivity between spaces,” he says.

The study has a daybed, a swing and moon artwork. The design is minimal and cozy.

“The moon print on the larger-than-life canvas is actually a photograph taken by me,” Chauhan says. “Visually, this room is the largest space in the house, thanks to the glass grid that allows long sightlines. Also, this room is connected to the balcony, so it has more moving-around space.”
The dramatic kitchen features black stone and beige back-painted glass. It is also functional, with plenty of storage.
This bedroom is a soft, soothing space. “We used big windows to allow more light in and make the room look larger. A small niche was created behind the bed as an accent feature for the room,” Chauhan says.

The master bedroom has a smart, sophisticated vibe, thanks to the bold blue wall paint with a textured pattern.
Mirrored closets make the room look more spacious.

The maple bed and the atomic wall art are key features of this room.
“We chose wooden flooring to help the furniture blend in, thereby giving the room a seamless look,” Chauhan says.
