When I design a kitchen, every bit of space is sacred. So when it comes to a place for the trash I never waste a perfectly good base cabinet, I go straight to the sink cabinet. It will never be a suitable place for food, platters, pots or pans.
We design our kitchens to have two trash pullouts under the sink, one for trash the other for recycling. The sink cabinet is generally a nasty cabinet with who knows what underneath it. The full extension pullout allows for a trash container in the front and some miscellaneous storage behind it which is accessible when the pullout cabinet is fully extended. The storage area needs to consider the sink plumbing, garbage disposal, and sink drain locations. With a bit of planning we have always made use of the sink cabinet for trash.
For those interested in being green beyond recycling we provide a compost drawer next to the sink. Simply open the drawer remove the stainless steel lid and slide the compostables into the compost drawer and cover with the lid. The tray is several inches deep and is designed to be emptied weekly or as needed.
