The Magic of Accessorizing
I don't love the term "home accessory," but I can't find one that's more descriptive, one that better describes something in the home that really serves no purpose other than to, well, accessorize.
Despite my distaste for the name, I definitely like the effect achieved when a homeowner finds one really amazing, standout element of design. I browsed through the Houzz archives and found that a lot of my favorite rooms are characterized by a great accessory - even more interesting, a lot of the homes we've featured in our interview series are given personality through a well-placed accessory or two.

Susie Harris' love this horse for its look and it's history - it is a wooden horse from the first carousel in New Orleans. How cool!
Nina van de Goor's home is full of tons of bright, cool things, but I'm especially partial to these little painted horses.
Ally, from From the Right Bank to the Left Coast, arranges her jewelry in such an artistic way, giving it dual purposes as a personal accessory and a home accessory.
Blogger Eve Martel found her little gray lamb at a flea market. Aren't they the best for finding this sort of thing?
I'm seeing more and more vintage typewriters in photos on Houzz...everyone must be into the romantic notion of writing the Great American Novel! I admit, I love the idea, too, and I love the Hemingway-style flair a typewriter gives any space.
Vanessa De Vargas' white horse statue might be small, but it certainly is regal.
How great is this globe? Lucky Sue Teso, from Solstice Home - it's in her house!
I love this little bright bird that sits outside at Dear Daisy Cottage. He's so fun!
There's nothing like a small sailboat to give a beach cottage one more touch of authenticity. I love the colors of this one, too!
