Connecting a garage to a house with a breezeway or other sort of small enclosed space, such as a mud/laundry/utility room is a common and very good architectural approach since it allows the exterior mass of the garage and the house to be separated (yet connected) by the smaller breezeway or utility room mass. Doing so avoids making all of the house into a large, bulky and ungainly shape. Too bad more folks don't think of it...here's an example which appears to be an older "farmhouse", which gives the appearance of additions over a life time of use.
