Other features. Gray glass subway tile backsplash.
Designer secret. “When designing rooms that are more functional, I give them the same attention as the main rooms in the home,” Grant says. “I look to incorporate unique materials, interesting light fixtures and decorative hardware. Adding in personal touches like accessories and fresh flowers and plants helps make the room feel like a room you look forward to spending time in.”

2. Pull-Down Rack Over Sink
Designer: Betty Terry of Graystone Custom Builders
Location: Corona del Mar, California
Size: 54 square feet (5 square meters); 9 by 6 feet
Homeowners’ request. Functional, fresh and fun.
Special feature. A pull-down rack designed for drying delicates either directly on the rack or on hangers as shown. “This was a tight space,” designer Betty Terry says. “The homeowner wanted a drying rack for her delicates that could work for flat drying and also drip drying. We strategically added the rack over the sink. It’s heavy-duty and can handle several items on hangers for busy washdays.”
Other features. Graphic porcelain floor tile. Gray quartz countertops. “We love our whites to be white — for both laundry and walls,” Terry says of her favorite go-to white paint, DEW380 by Dunn-Edwards.
Designer secret. “We love to keep things simple,” Terry says. “Pick one element in a room to add interest and personality. Here we chose the floors.”
“Uh-oh” moment. “The space was too tight for a door to swing in, and we couldn’t use a barn door,” Terry says. “After much deliberation we opted for a pocket door — let’s face it, it was the only option. To spice it up a little, we added glass to the top half and etched the word ‘laundry’ on it.”

3. Pullout Folding Counter
Designer: Holly Hollenbeck of HSH Interiors
Location: San Francisco
Size: 22½ square feet (2 square meters); 9 by 2½ feet
Homeowners’ request. Create a functional family laundry area in a former coat closet. The couple would soon be welcoming a baby. “Originally, their washer-dryer was a very small stacked unit around the corner in a narrow closet,” says designer Holly Hollenbeck, whose client sent her inspirational photos she found on Houzz to communicate her style. “There was no space to sort, hang or fold laundry. This laundry space was just another coat closet; we combined the two existing closet spaces.”
Special feature. Pullout countertop and sorting area. Almost everything in the custom-designed laundry closet is made of durable and easy-to-clean melamine.
Other features. Deep counter for laundry baskets. Rod for drying delicates. Cabinets for laundry supplies. Three sliding slab doors conceal the laundry on one side or a cleaning supply closet on the other. “This is a compact but totally functional space for family laundry work,” Hollenbeck says.

Designer: Valerie Grant Interiors
Location: Summit, New Jersey
Size: 156 square feet (14 square meters); 12 by 13 feet
Homeowners’ request. A sophisticated, comfortable, easy-to-maintain home for themselves (a couple) and their three teenage boys. “The laundry room happens to be one of my favorite rooms in the home,” designer Valerie Grant says. “Under the theory that laundry is not a particularly fun activity, I wanted to make the space as desirable as possible. With large-capacity washers and dryers, [and] plenty of room for ironing, folding and line drying, it is a spacious, bright and inviting space conveniently located on the second floor. All combine to make doing laundry a more enjoyable task.”
Special feature. “We added a rod above the sink to create a space for line drying,” Grant says. “Having it located above the sink is the ideal location so wet clothes can drip directly into it.”
