Go with French Doors, you will never regret. Less maintenance...no silicone and tracks and channels to get moldy. It is a superior installation over fixed panel jobs (you will only have 4 hinges). And yes, what a dream for cleaning the shower or recaulking...no more cleaning from inside the shower, just swing them out of the way. I have installed French Doors in 2 of my own bathrooms, and many others to boot. No complaints. In one of my bathrooms, I have a condition were the door can swing outwards and hit a sink. I just stuck a clear small rubber bumper on the sink edge to soften any hard bang. And yes, when you swing it in, it can and will often hit the shower head, no big deal. These doors are tempered and super strong when hit on the face, they are only vulnerable when hitting the corners or edges. You will learn very quickly how to manuever your doors properly. I would go with 3/8" glass, that is fine and will provide a nice solid feel to your doors. 1/2" is overkill and not worth the additional cost. I do all my installations, so I make sure the gap between the 2 doors or against the walls is 1/8". I have literally no leakage between the doors or along the wall edges, and I use NO bottom door sweeps. At most, may be I get a tablespoon worth of water at times, no more than you would get when stepping out with a wet foot. In regards to the finishes, I have tried all them all. The reality is this, you need to maintain your doors...which means you need to clean them regularly. There is no such thing as a maintenance free door.
