How much control do I need for my skimmers?
Yes, your spot on. A higher speed during the cleaners time and lower speed during regular circulation. Also, you should always also have some suction from the main drain at the same time as your skimmer. See ya, Kelly

Many skimmers are equipped with two usable holes. One is for the suction outlet that pulls the water into the skimmer. The other may be sealed or go to bottom drain or to a hole in the wall called an equalizer. When they go to a bottom drain, there should be a diverter that looks like a closed end tube cut in half with a butterfly valve in the middle and a hole in the top. The butterfly closes mostly so only the skimmer works. The hole in the top has a cover so that only the drain works. This permits control of the skimmer and drain and is usually cheaper to plumb than running individual lines and valving at the equipment pad. Most of us say YUK! to this. When the second hole goes to an equalizer port, the cover is closed so the skimmer may be used for vacuuming with a vacuum plate over the skimmer basket. The purpose of an equalizer is to prevent the pump from sucking air if the water level drops just below the skimmer. Scott
