The Utopian Impulse: Buckminster Fuller and the Bay Area
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

This comprehensive architecture and design exhibit explores some of the most iconic projects of designer, philosopher and engineer Buckminster Fuller. On display are 65 works, including prints, drawings, photographs and documentary video. His 4D House, geodesic dome (photo), World Game, Dymaxion car and other iconic projects celebrate his radical idealism, and the exhibit also showcases his impact on Bay Area endeavors. From the Whole Earth Catalog to the One Laptop Per Child initiative to tents by retailer The North Face, see how Fuller's visionary ideas in technology, ecology and social responsibility have influenced and inspired local innovators.

Bouquets to Art

See pieces from the de Young Museum's permanent collection take floral form in the 28th annual "Bouquets to Art" fundraiser. More than 140 local, national and international floral designers pay tribute and take inspiration from paintings in this uniquely colorful and fragrant display. This weekend wraps up a five-day event, and proceeds support education and special exhibition programming at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
Hours: March 16, 9:30 a.m.–8:45 p.m.; March 17, 9:30 a.m.–5:15 p.m.
Cost: $11–$21. Purchase tickets in advance.

Join Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum curator Cynthia E. Smith as she examines the urban landscape of today and tomorrow. Hear her thoughts on how modern designers, architects and engineers can help solve the world's most critical urban population problems in the developing world. Smith's recent exhibitions at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and the United Nations sparked an international dialogue on the opportunities to use technology and design. A book signing follows the lecture.

Calling all design students! Start brainstorming innovative household appliances of the future for entry into the 2012 Electrolux Design Lab competition. This year's theme is "Design Experience"; students are challenged to draw inspiration from professionals such as chefs, architects, interior designers and hotel designers to design home appliances that will provide a fuller sensory experience. Whether through innovative technology or a new user interface, concepts should reflect Scandinavian design values. Top prize is 5,000 euros and a six-month paid internship at an Electrolux global design center.

Maya Romanoff’s Handmade Wall Coverings
Washington Design Center, 300 D St. SW, Washington, D.C.
Join Joyce Romanoff and a team of artisans as they demonstrate the process behind the jewelry-like handmade wallpapers of Maya Romanoff. A reception will follow the demonstration at Donghia, Suite 503. At 11 a.m. that same day, join Andre Wells, Andrew Law and Kathleen Litchfield as they share their expertise on outdoor design and entertaining.
