Hello Kelly, Are you asking how to use a pre-made rug runner on your stairs? If that is the case, you can find how-to videos online, and you will probably want to use stair rods to hold the rug firmly in place- they come in a variety of styles and finishes but below is an example of one. If you do not want to use stair rods, you will probably need to use an air stapler and staple it a lot to make sure it doesn't slide or bunch up. That could do significant damage to wood treads and risers, but that may not matter to you.
Generally when we do stair runners, they are made out of typical carpeting material and installed by our carpet guy. You can go to a local carpet store and they have stair runners available in different styles and widths. They are finished on the sides like a pre-made runner would be too. Hope that helps!
