Designer secret. “We mixed and matched inexpensive with rich pieces,” Johnson says. “To stay within budget, we did everything from thrifting to buying an amazing bed from CB2. It’s all about knowing where to spend and where to hold back. This gives you a unique style of mixing old with new, and no one will have that same look.”
“Uh-oh” moment. “We decided to execute installing the brick wall ourselves,” Johnson says. “With an older home, always remember there are no straight walls, which means placing panels on the wall calls for patience and lots of cuts. Then we painted ourselves too. Moral of the story, hire a handyman. It’s worth the money. We will stick to the design.”
Drommen acacia wood queen bed: CB2; T-shirt jersey duvet cover and triangle side table: Urban Outfitters; Talbert chest of drawers: Living Spaces; Marrakesh shag rug: Rugs USA; embossed paintable brick hardboard wall panels: Lowe’s; Ultra White wall paint: Sherwin-Williams

3. Clean and Relaxed
Designer: Cy Carter of Carter Design
Location: Los Angeles
Size: 235 square feet (22 square meters)
Homeowners’ request. The owners sought a calm master bedroom with a midcentury vibe and a sense of play. “We wanted to bring in design elements that reflected the midcentury design of the home, particularly sparse, true, warm compositions with moments of saturated color,” says designer Cy Carter.
Special features. Creamy grasscloth walls. Large kilim rug. Large windows. “The bedroom was an extension of the philosophy of the home we all held: simple, straightforward lines made up by a mix of vintage and contemporary furniture and materials with small moments of flair,” Carter says.
Designer secret. “I love the photo over the bed by Elena Gallotta,” Carter says. “It adds the right thing to the room. We looked for a while, and when I found that piece and presented it to the client, we all said, ‘Yes!’ It tied it all together.”

Designers: Arlene Lord and Kimberly Hodgin of Lord Interior Design
Location: Portland, Oregon
Size: 216 square feet (20 square meters); 12 by 18 feet
Homeowners’ request. The owners of this new home travel a lot but did not want their bedroom to look like a hotel room. “Shopping from various sources and avoiding defaulting to typical things in a room kept the goal on target,” says designer Arlene Lord.
Special features. Large multicolored area rug. Custom window treatments. Painted wall feature. “I think the rug steals the show,” Lord says.
Designer secret. “I think the mix of modern and vintage is very welcoming and gives the room soul,” Lord says. “We avoid ever having a room full of new things. Go high and low in your items. Work in something handcrafted. Additionally, the inexpensive but effective use of color behind the bed gave the headboard wall height and importance and balanced the room. An easy trick anyone can do, although we hired a pro for perfection.”
Design-build: Arciform; dresser and bench: 1stdibs; bed, nightstand and lamp: Hive Modern; rug: Christiane Millinger; bedding: Anthropologie; linens: Parachute; Simply White wall paint: Benjamin Moore; ceiling light: Rejuvenation
