A cabinet sales person and their cabinet installer in a retail store is not a kitchen designer and a licensed GC. Been preaching that for years. They are there to *sell* you things, not produce a good, or even legal, design. It’s even in most sales contracts that the responsibility to meet codes is *on the homeowner*. Because, legally, it IS.
Also many state licensing requirements do not require GC licensing for a “cabinet installer”. CA does, and a handful of other states. Its always on the homeowner to do the due diligrnce and verify what is required in their location, as well as to verify the actual licensing and insurance of the contractors involved.
If you did that due diligence verification, and the GC is licensed and insured, that is who bears the ultimate responsibility for accepting the sales person’s box arrangements (won’t use the word ”design”here) as a buildsble plan. And that is who owes you a 30” rangex 36” hood hood, and cabinets between it and the wall.
And that is just the big Obvious that you’ve shared. There is probably a lot more to ferret through.
Any recourse against the cabinet sales person will likely be limited by your ability to take them to court. Unless they admit any responsibility, and offer any compensation. Like the new cabinets snd appliances needed here. But if they are seriously that bad at design, they need to be taken to court and put out of business.
