Architecture has to respond to cold days and long nights in Northern Europe. As winter drags on for a lot of us, we can take some lessons from people who live in places like Scandinavia or The Netherlands.

1. This farmhouse in Österlen, Sweden, was in terrible disrepair before the family hired Jonas Labbé and Johannes Schotanus of LASC Studio to bring it back to life.
White paint from floor to the peak of the ceiling keeps things bright, while a woodstove keeps things toasty.
2. Here's a peek at graphic designer and blogger Jeanette Lund's charming cottage in Southern Norway.
You can see Jeanette's artist's eye in the way she chooses and composes her home furnishings.

3. This look of this cozy home in South Holland, The Netherlands, was imported from Canada. The owner wanted a Canadian Arts and Crafts home, and even had materials imported from Canada to be sure the look would be authentic.
A mix of cozy fabrics, cushy upholstery and autumnal hues makes this a perfect room for nestling under a throw and reading a book.
This little waterway leads to a major canal. The owners can look out during winter months and look forward to summer sails.

4. The owners of this home in Delft, The Netherlands have a penchant for fabulous light fixtures. Carefully selected lighting is a key part of getting through those days when it's dark out long before dinnertime.
A light, neutral base provides a perfect backdrop for carefully selected furnishings. The family includes a 2-year-old daughter, so this furniture can stand up to toddler wear and tear as well.
Glossy red paint adds a reflection and interest to an often overlooked area, the hallway.

5. Artist, photographer and blogger Tina Sindahl created this glamorous nest in Norrköping, Sweden. She shares the entire process in her blog, Signed By Tina.
The renovation added lots of glitz, right down to this towel bar, which is studded with Swarovski crystals.
A luxe mix of textiles includes a velvet headboard, reflective wallpaper, sequined throw pillows and mirrors.
