Ha! When we bought our home, the echo in the main living area was so bad, I had to leave the room to talk on the phone.
It's poor acoustics and can be managed. First thing I would do is get some drapes. You might be able to get away with lightweight drapes, or cloth Roman shades. Temporarily pin bed sheets to the doors to see how much that will help.
Next, I would put a nice, long runner in front of the sink.
For some sneaky stuff. I would get eggcrate foam, the kind you can pick up at Target and is made to go on top of a mattress. Cut it to size, and put it on top of your cabinets behind the crown molding.
Next, I would see if I could stick it on the underside the island with some spray adhesive. It doesn't have to be a full piece, but if you can hide some foam on the underside, it will help make the acoustics more cozy. (You can also do this trick, to the underside of some dining room tables, and some chairs.
And my favorite, if you have any gallery wrapped prints, cut foam to size and add eggcrate foam in the voids behind it. I used simple painters tape to hold it it in place. When you hang them, you'll have turned your artwork into acoustic panels. This particular print I wanted flush mounted, so I also removed the wire hooks, and added sawtooth hangers. When you walk by, it's completely flush to the wall, even with the extra padding.
