Plywood is the right idea for proper support, but it's still dependent on how well the vanity is constructed. Side wall support would help.

HI -- My floating vanity is mounted on a backing of plywood wall instead of just drywall . Never have had a problem . You could sit on it and it won't fall and the grandchild does sit on the vanity .
