New This Week: 3 Fresh and Clean Laundry Spaces
Breezy style and attention to detail make washing clothes something to look forward to
2. Small-Space Surprise
Designer: Janie Hungerford
Location: Vancouver
Size: 14 square feet (1.3 square meters)
Homeowners’ request. Create a playful second-floor hallway laundry space with splashes of interest and color.
Special features. Dog-print wallpaper (Best in Show by Osborne & Little). Custom light oak stained millwork and doors. Graphite-colored appliances. Hanging rod. Sink. Nearby skylights.
Designer secret. “Try to create the unexpected and have fun in a small space,” designer Janie Hungerford says. “All the solid oak stained doors when closed keep this space clean and unassuming, but when they are opened there is a playful wallpaper and a very functional space for laundry.”
“Uh-oh” moment. “The project was a total gut to the studs, so there were many surprises,” Hungerford says. “There were bug infestations that had to be dealt with and new space-planning techniques to make it function.”

3. Ironing Out the Details
Designer: Michelle Berwick
Location: Aurora, Ontario, Canada
Size: 75 square feet (7 square meters)
Homeowners’ request. Design a double-duty laundry space and mudroom with integrated storage.
Special features. Storage cabinet with pull-down ironing board. Steel sink. Bold handmade cement tile backsplash. White quartz countertop.
Designer secret. “I feel like you can really experiment in small spaces,” designer Michelle Berwick says. “It’s totally the spot for a bold tile, a fun wallpaper, a hit of color.”
“Uh-oh” moment. “So here’s the lowdown on the cement tiles,” Berwick says. “Due to the handmade nature, there are imperfections. Some have scratches or chips, and that’s just the way they look. Once installed, it’s not very noticeable. Some people love it. Some people hate it. If that would bother you, go for the porcelain look-alikes. They are cheaper to buy and install too.”
Backsplash tile: Saltillo; countertop: Caesarstone in Pure White; cabinetry: custom, Exclusive Designs; floor tile: Ciot; appliances: Whirlpool; contractor: La Vida Contracting; project photographer: Sam Stock Photography
