New This Week: 3 Bathrooms That Stylishly Mix Materials
Smart pairings of elegant finishes catapult these bathrooms into style heaven
Designer secret. “I really fell in love with the marble,” Lackey says. “It was quite busy, so I knew I needed to use very muted accents to not overwhelm the space. So many times I will see spaces that have so many beautiful features, but no single one ever gets the chance to be celebrated because everything is competing. I feel the trick to designing a bathroom is choosing one material that you are going to let be your feature. In this case, the marble. Everything else should be complementary. The marble is the only thing people should remember; the rest needs to fade into the background.”
“Uh-oh” moment. Because this is a condo, the drain for the tub was already existing. “The client really wanted a beautiful new tub, preferably a freestanding one,” Lackey says. “After removing and disposing of the tub, we could not find anywhere a tub that had a drain that would fit exactly where the current one was. We probably sent at least 100 bathtubs to the contractor to see if [they were] a fit, and they all came back a no — except the one we used. It was the glass slipper of bathtubs.”
Faucet: Volare straight wall-mount in brushed gold, Aquabrass; sink: Vox vessel, Kohler; bathtub: Balla 59 drop-in, Acri-tec; bathtub faucet: Alpha wall-mount in brushed gold, Aquabrass; shower fixtures: brushed gold, Aquabrass; sconces: Mira, Cedar & Moss; floor tile: nature stone in gray, 24 by 24 inches, Creekside Tile; countertop: Caesarstone in Sleek Concrete; project photographer: Tracey Ayton

Designer secret. “We love mixing things up and utilizing special elements that the clients own with new finds,” Marini says. “Creating conversation pieces [and] mixing vintage fabric and furniture with new textures allow us to give the homes creative expression and showcase our style mixed with the clients’ personal touches and personality. In this case, the penguin statue was used in the decor as it was given to our clients as a wedding gift. Penguins mate for life, and so it stands between them as a reminder. We love that story and sentiment, and positioned him right in between their vanities.”

Designer secret. “I like a lot of natural light in a bath, but window treatments can often feel fussy,” Gridley says. “The windows in this room are frosted, which offers both privacy and a naturally diffused light in the vanity area.”

Designer: Sarah Lackey of Sarah-Marie Interior Designs
Location: Vancouver
Size: 99 square feet (9.1 square meters); 11 by 9 feet (3.3 by 2.7 meters)
Homeowners’ request. For this master bathroom, the homeowners, who have three kids, wanted a relaxing escape with sufficient storage. “Their old bathroom had very little storage,” designer Sarah Lackey says. “They felt their things were always on display, and therefore they felt disorganized and cramped. By using limited materials, and a vanity with drawers rather than doors, they are able to store all their items efficiently and relax in their new monochromatic space.”
Special features. Large-format Arabescato marble tile, 12 by 24 inches, covering the bathtub, shower and back wall. Fixtures with brushed-gold finish. Quartz countertop that looks like concrete. Crisp white paint (Benjamin Moore’s Intense White). Whitewashed walnut vanity. Wall sconces with black and gold finishes on mirror.
