Trending Now: 10 Popular Rooms Capture the Magic of Being a Kid
An indoor climbing wall and a beanbag reading nook are among the highlights of these charming kid-centered spaces
Kids’ spaces can be so fun to decorate, especially if you design the rooms to encourage the sense of discovery and wonder inherent in growing up. These 10 kids’ rooms, pulled from the most popular photos uploaded to Houzz since Jan. 1, 2018, feature elements such as a climbing wall and a hanging chair that are sure to delight children of all ages.
1. Climbing wall. This climbing wall in a room in County Wicklow, Ireland, offers an indoor activity for Ireland’s rainy days. Two sets of rings and a climbing ladder support more bedroom gymnastics. Faux grass makes for a softer landing (though we’d recommend an extra-cushy landing pad beneath it if you try this at home), and a blue painted ceiling evokes the sky. A soccer ball light fixture completes this corner’s sporty vibe.
2. Swing seat. Instead of climbing the walls, how about sitting in a seat hung from the ceiling? This child’s bedroom in Lyon, France, features a chair suspended from a strong ceiling beam — it’s an ideal place for relaxing, dangling one’s legs and reading a good book. String lights bring a bit of twinkle to the ceiling beam and the room.

3. Family photo wall. A wall of black-and-white family photos in a beach bungalow in Charleston, South Carolina, creates a comforting backdrop for a kids’ bedroom — one can’t but help feel part of a large clan with all these visual reminders. The orderly layout and black-and-white palette keep the wall display from feeling chaotic; it is actually a custom wallpaper.

4. Rolling ladder. A rolling ladder on rails adds an element of fun to this kids’ room, which has multiple bunks available for a slumber party. The rail offers a way up to the upper bunks, and slides conveniently out of the way so that room occupants can access the many built-in storage drawers. A nearly black ceiling brings sophistication to this kids’ space.

5. Study spot. This space features room for two to sleep plus a dedicated homework spot. The custom built-in loft bed-and-staircase design includes a bookcase, with room for school texts and decorative objects. The room’s color scheme is primarily white with hits of blush and black, complementing the neutral, mostly black-and-white palette used throughout the rest of the home.
6. Beanbag tent. The combination of the Dalmatian-print beanbag and airy canopy is the star feature of this sweet room, offering a child a small retreat for relaxation and privacy. Decorative flower-shaped string lights make the canopy feel even more special.

7. Global focus. A map of the world gracing the wall of this child’s room in Moscow could be used to help a burgeoning global citizen understand where he or she lives in relation to the rest of the world. The room’s layout, with a daybed and upper cubbies against one wall and a desk against another, maximizes the floor area for playing.

8. Playhouse. What child wouldn’t love a playhouse built into his or her bedroom? This one in France includes multiple places for napping, with soft spots to rest in the playhouse’s basement, main story and attic. Baskets of flowers hanging from the windows provide a sense of landscaping. Another winning feature: an indoor swing that hangs from the ceiling.
9. Double-decker. This Park City, Utah, vacation home has top bunks with rails that add security and style. Matching baskets beneath the lower bunk provide storage so the space stays tidy, and a coat tree near the window can be used to corral the day’s ski gear.
10. Star quality. This child’s room in Brooklyn, New York, features hits of bright orange, a natural fit for a home that is filled with bold color. A variety of patterns — stripes on the bed, posts on the bench seat, damask on the wallpaper — keeps the energy in the room high. The asymmetrical star above the bed provides a focal point and delivers the punch of a graphic comic book-style “Pow!”
