Notice the lights in the ceiling. They are like yours minus the ball that sticks out. I would ask an electrician to give you a price to take them and replace them with LED recessed lights. The LED lights are much more expensive than regular recessed lights. BUT the good news is you put them in and the bulbs are so heavy duty that you don't replace them for like 10-15 years. Plus they are energy efficient. If you in fact do replaster those ceilings. You might want to consider having them replace your 8-10 inch recessed eyeballs with 5 inch LED recessed lights. They will look much better and what they do to achieve this is when they put the plaster board up on your ceiling they cut the hole for your new 5 inch LED's that size and install that size. It will make a big difference. And IF you do replaster the ceiling you might want to ask the same electrician to whip the ceiling in the middle with wiring should you ever want to hang a center light in the middle of that ceiling. Just a thought.
So granted the ceiling is not high but note the gray couch and tv directly in front. This color is very very light. I think it lends a contemporary look. The black windows add to that look. Note though that your couch fabric will allow you to add pillow in many colors
