I had a client with a similar situation. I had organized closets for her in two previous homes. In this situation, organizers would not have provided enough for her, and too much for him. She would still need part of his closet. The closets were the same size and the doors broke up the wall the bed faced.
They consulted with me as to recommended dimensions and potential closet design and capacities. I advised them the minimum walk in width needed to be 72", preferably 78". The used the master bathroom doorway as a reference point and the closet ended up just over 74" wide. They removed walls, changed the door location, expanded into the bedroom and put an angle to transition from the entry to the bedroom.
Attached is a sketch of the before and after floor plan and photos of the organizers I designed and installed. I recommended the door swing and placed shelving for linens behind the in swinging door.
They gained more wall space in the bedroom with room for furniture, eliminated the bed view into the closets, the ability to properly store unequal amounts of clothing, and more capacity. This definitely improved the master suite.
