The Dazzle and Drama of Damask Decor
Damask is a gorgeous type of textile that can have a very powerful effect on home design. It is characterized by a lustrous background fabric on top of which emerges a raised design pattern. The three-dimensional effect combined with a design that is usually monochromatic or two-toned is an attention-getter in any room.
Damask designs are most commonly associated with drapery and upholstery. As time has gone on, we've seen this design used wonderfully on small home accessories such as pillows. In some cases, it has been enlarged into wallpaper designs. In all of these examples, the design is bold and unforgettable.
Damask designs are often symmetrical in shape. They are often geometric, which magnifies the boldness of the design. However, damask designs may also be designed with inspirations from flora and fauna. This choice is still a dramatic pattern but can be less intense than the geometric option especially if the right color choices are made.

The pillow in the forefront of this photo has a great damask design. The velvety texture of the fabric practically leaps off of the pillow's soft background. The effect is particularly dramatic because of the black-on-white color choice.
This damask printed chair is difficult to ignore even though the color choice isn't nearly as bold as black-and-white. The raised pattern is alluring. The effect is enhanced since the chair is set against a series of plain white chairs.
There are many dramatic pieces in this room including the chair at the head of the table and the chandelier hanging in the center of the space. However, my eye is drawn upwards to the damask fabric ceiling. What a unique choice for a room! The brown-and-blue color choice of the pattern is a chic selection.
This is an example of the dramatic use of damask wallpaper as an accent wall in a large room. Had the black-and-white theme of the room been carried out in the wallpaper the room might be overwhelming. The decision to use a more monochromatic damask pattern is an interesting, smart, stylish choice.
In contrast, this black-and-white damask wallpaper is perfect in the bedroom. The black and white theme is carried out in a more frivolous or lighthearted way here through a combination of stripes and polka dots. The bold colors of the other wall, the pillows and the headboard add additional fun to this boldly designed room.
The drama of the damask design can be impacted greatly just by the colors that are used in the design. The light blue seen here is clearly less bold than the black and white of the last picture. It is a great choice for a bathroom!
One really fun idea is to reverse a damask design when repeating it in a space. Here we see green-on-white for the drapes and white-on-green on the wall. Similar options would be to do a color reversal for a pillow/bed set combination, a wallpaper/ furniture combination or a damask ceiling/ floor combination.
A damask print with a botanical theme to it is a popular choice in many homes. If you enjoy decorating with flowers and plants then this type of print can really complement the other pieces in your house.
I can't ignore this great door when talking about damask design. Technically, it's not damask because it is not a fabric and the design itself is not raised. However, the pattern is inspired by damask fabric. Additionally, the raised panels of the door itself create a textured look that is in line with damask design. And there is no denying that this door makes a great dramatic statement!
