April, sorry to hear about your Grandma, that is still very young in my eyes for her.
The plant should make it just fine if you take proper steps..
Looking at the mix, it seems that you water in sips and the mix seems to be kind of old? Not porous? Holding salts...I absolutely don't like the looks of that mix and I am certain neither do your plants.
That plant is not going to come back strong at all until you open that mix by using a fresh one to hold you over until the middle of spring. Are you providing lots of sunlight or indirect sunlight?
911 IS ORDER.
If they were mine, I would re pot them into afresh mix, and knock as much of the older one from those roots as possible without damaging the roots. The I would use a mix with half per lite or pumice and half potting mix to get you by until you can use and even more porous one until the plant has made a good come back.
I would use a smaller pot if the roots are small, about one size bigger than the root ball re plant and soak it well. Set it in a very bright warm location and water thoroughly only when your mix is almost dry, not BONE DRY since Thanksgiving and Christmas Cactus love moisture more than most succulents.
If that plants was very special to me, I would also take a few cuttings and root those as back up.
Then most important, keep the plants out of cats harm way.....)
