Mod Style and Graphic Color Pack a Design Punch
Cabinet cutouts, a pedestal table and a penny tile backsplash create a fun look in a kitchen for a chef and a bartender
A penny tile backsplash brings color, texture and movement. Patterned Formica lines the open cabinet for more visual texture. Inky-blue walls and gray quartz countertops allow the sleek cabinetry to pop.
Paint: Stiffkey Blue, Farrow & Ball; countertop: quartz in Grey Lake, Wilsonart; backsplash tile: gray-blend speckled penny mosaic, three quarters of an inch, Discover Tile; faucet: Trinsic, Delta

An open case on the countertop holds a collection of cookbooks and bar items.

The cabinet cutouts are designed to be ergonomic, to keep the cabinet fronts smooth and to give a peek inside. “You can see the birch edges on shelving edges too,” Marsh says. “And having the cutout only on one of each pair of doors was another playful detail.”
Fire engine-red Eames-style chairs surround a round table with a wire pedestal base that helps keep the compact space feeling light and open.
Cork flooring replaced concrete tiles, adding visual warmth and texture. Larger windows over the sink to the left and a glass-panel door bring in light and views of a garden and patio out back.
The microwave, which the couple rarely uses, sits inside the tall pantry cabinet in the back corner.

This floor plan shows how the design fits a lot of function into a compact space.

Kitchen at a Glance
Location: Boston
Size: 180 square feet (16.7 square meters)
Designers: Carol Marsh and Ariel Roth of Helios Design Group
The owners of this Boston apartment are a professional chef and a professional bartender, so a functional kitchen with ample storage and counter space was a must-have for their cuisine-centric lives. They also needed to integrate a dining table and chairs, since the apartment does not have a separate area for eating.
Their previous kitchen, part of which had sunk 2 inches, was ripped out and a new subfloor and large-scale windows were added.
For the style, designer Carol Marsh stuck to a concept that’s sleek, playful and full of color. The homeowners saved money by going with white laminate cabinets and splurged on the range.
