Bishop and her team
sourced surf-inspired pieces that aligned with the color palette but offered a bit of punch.
“The client actually gave us a lot of freedom to accessorize,” she says. “The goal was to keep it young, fresh and playful, so our team was on the hunt for colorful vintage accessories at local antiques shops to pop against the white walls and cabinetry.”

Who lives here: A married couple, their three teenage and college-age sons, and two Labrador retrievers
Location: Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina
Size: 1,500 square feet (139 square meters), three bedrooms, one sleeping loft, two bathrooms
Designer: Cortney Bishop Design
This beach house, originally built around 1920 just a block from the ocean, is a second home and retreat for a family from Richmond, Virginia.
“When our client found the property, it was the quintessential Sullivan’s Island cottage with vertical beadboard walls and original heart-pine floors,” says interior designer Cortney Bishop. “Those original bones were too good to pass up, but we knew we could modernize the space and deliver a new bungalow with a more retro, surfer vibe.“
Exterior paint: Wevet, Farrow & Ball; shutter and porch ceiling paint: Rainwashed, Sherwin-Williams
