Interior Designers & Decorators

Spacious Brooklyn Airbnb with Modern Furniture & Vintage Style

This 500-sq-ft floor-through apartment was outdated—and was a virtual rabbit’s warren of closet-sized rooms—so it required a total gut renovation. Walls were demo'ed & then sound attenuated for an airier, brighter space impervious to noise from loud neighbors. A new, unobtrusive HVAC system was also positioned above a comfy Mid-Century Modern lounger.

The unit's rental status informed its decorative accents and styling: There are enough interesting moments for obligatory Instagram shots, but the space still remains uncluttered. Walls were kept white so as to appeal to every guest—and existing Mansard-roof alcoves became cute reading nooks outfitted with custom cushions. Original, vintage artwork and high-quality furniture commingle with budget-friendly Ikea pieces.

This space is both easy to clean—and easy on the eyes. A simple Formica table with a large reading lamp is the perfect spot for dining on some takeout, and easily adapts to an impromptu desk/work station.

The galley-style kitchen was constructed solely of elements that were smartly recycled from another part of the home. The full bath was gutted—and walls, including the shower surround, were covered with affordable, small-scale subway tile finished with stain-resistant gray grout. The mirror was repurposed, and navy-blue penny tiles cover the entire floor. We also stuck solely to shiny chrome accents to cap off that 'hotel-clean' feeling guests love when they're AirBnb-ing.
