project 83 : housing competition

seattle washington had a case study housing competition to look at the issues of affordability, appropriateness, and living conditions going forward for the next 50 years. we decided to create our own requirements and look at concepts for reinventing existing structures, building systems and mechanical flexibility. we developed a stacked building system that allows for flexibility of spaces by making the exterior envelop the structure and all interior items are purely for division of space, privacy and/ or specific use. the wall systems would allow for multiple configurations over over time as needs change. the stacking building system keeps mechanical, electrical and plumbing in a "thick floor" that allows for simple reconfigurations for each floor area. a vertical shaft joins all of the systems and allows for service, updating and adding systems as technology allows. additionally, the lower floor is set up to allow for a home office / work space and a detached living unit is positioned above the garage.
