Not your Grandma's Wallpaper!

This was one of my favorite bedrooms that I have had the pleasure of working on this year. The clients were right when they told me that the large space in Anna Kate’s Bedroom was a little overwhelming. They key to managing large spaces is dividing it into zones.

We decided to start by creating a beautiful focal point on the back wall with enlarged floral wallpaper. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve peeled wallpaper out of homes. But Ellie Cashman’s wallpaper is NOT your Grandmother’s old wallpaper. It is the most fresh and exciting update on a traditional floral wallpaper. I was so excited to have a project to apply Cashman’s artwork to. I chose to use the black, white and blush found in the wallpaper as our palette for the bedroom and bathroom.

The client had recently purchased the bed from Pottery Barn Kids. We did not purchase any new furniture for this room with the exception of the two bedside tables and the rug. I felt like we really needed large bedside tables to help us take up the size of the large back wall, and balance the space while providing visual symmetry. I chose these bedside tables in particular because I loved how the beautiful porcelain white finish popped off of the black background in the wallpaper. I love the beautiful Swedish inspired wood construction on these chests. They offer great storage, but my favorite feature is the hidden drawer beneath the table top. It can be opened by two notches in the sides. This surprising little drawer has an opening in the back for charging your accessories at night. The bedside tables are available at Alexandra’s showroom at Carriage House Antiques in Jackson, TN and you can shop the look on Alexandra’s website at www.AlexandraLauren.com. The addition of the rug helped anchor the bed space and ad softness and texture underfoot. This fluffy shag rug had the perfect hue of grey found in the wallpaper, and has just the right about of sparkle in it for a 3 year old little girl... (or lets be honest, any girl that loves some sparkle)!

We helped to amplify the “zone" for play by enhancing they client’s existing teepee, a place for creativity and drawing with a desk, a space for reading with a rocker and book shelf in the corner. I always try to add at least one vintage or antique piece to a new space. It really adds character. I loved the fact that my client had held onto a few unique pieces of furniture from her childhood for her little girls room. We repurposed her mother, Richa’s own desk from her childhood, and a family heirloom chest in this space. We repainted these items, and added some fun decorative hardware from Anthropologie to help them fit our new look. We helped the teepee the home owners already had take up more space with the addition of a faux sheep skin rug and some throw pillows. We painted and repurposed RiCha’s desk from /when she was little into and arts and craft space, that Anna Kate can later grow into as a desk for studying. We used one of the rockers used when the twins were infants to create a “zone” space for reading next to the window seat. And we added a small table for Anna Kate’s tea parties.

Anna Kate’s bathroom was so much fun to design. The floor is a black and grey marble hex. I chose a squared Kohler toilet to compliment the shapes in the tile. The charcoal grout in the white subway tile keeps the room fresh and light, but pulls in the dark contrast from the floors. I loved the champagne bronze faucet with black handles that I found on Wayfair.com. I did two floating mirrors suspended from the ceiling in front of a white subway tile backsplash using charcoal grout. The glass door knobs are architectural salvage from the original Memphis, Peabody Hotel, and tied in with the vanity sconces perfectly.
