This in-law unit in North Berkeley is a multi-generational solution to the Bay Area housing crunch: the studio cottage is home to the principal and owner of Yumi Interiors, with her baby-boomer parents living in the main house. This project was a unique opportunity to design a space for what turned out to be one of my most difficult clients: myself. The reward, of course, was the chance to build my own home from the ground-up, with all the details, ideas, and kooky design concepts I've been rolling around in my mind for who-knows how long. More than one friend has told me my home looks like my personality manifested, which I'm pretty sure means I nailed it.
