My Houzz: An Australian Home Appeals to 3 Generations
An inner city heritage listed house is converted into two sustainable dwellings for three generations of the one family.
Architects Oli Scholz and Simone Vinall (www.scholzvinall.com.au) created these two inspiring and sustainable living spaces on a small inner city block in Adelaide. Their clients had purchased a heritage listed terrace house, which has remained mostly unchanged. The additions are an extension to the existing building and a two storey house in the space behind. They have succeeded in creating a family friendly home for 4 adults and two children, with room for a vegetable garden, rain water tanks, off street parking and a plentitude of fruit trees.
Sustainable features include the small overall footprint which makes for energy efficient heating; maximum use of natural light with large northern facing windows and glass doors; concrete slab floors for thermal mass, louvres for cross ventilation, rain water tanks, a grey water for watering the garden, espaliered fruit trees on vertical spaces, solar hot water and solar panels on the house behind.
