Guemes Island Modern Cabin

The Owners had been vacationing on Guemes Island in Washington State for many years, until they found an empty lot with a beautiful view of the Puget Sound. Their vision was to design and build a modern cabin on the property. The cabin is designed as a one story structure with daylight basement and attached two car garage. One main design goal of this new cabin was to design and build the structure with sustainable construction methods and materials to create an extremely energy efficient home. The exterior envelope of the structure is tightly built and highly insulated providing for a comfortable, balanced interior of the house year round requiring very low energy consumption needed for heating and cooling. The simple design includes a double shed roof constructed of Structurally Insulated Panels (SIPS) panels with exposed wood beams. The walls are built with standard framing, but wrapped with a blanket of Gutex wood fiber insulation to minimize heat loss through the walls. The foundation is built with Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF). Other features incorporated into the design are the durable, low maintenance polished concrete floors designed to withstand their two Great Danes, a large kitchen for entertaining, 45' long lift and slide glass door spanning across the great room, a central fireplace, and large deck for entertaining and enjoying the views.
