A Victorian Reimagined

The Bernal Heights Neighborhood of San Francisco is known for its stunning views and its tight-knit community. It’s a place where many families put down their roots.

Returning back to the idea of roots, our clients purchased their old victorian home in Bernal Heights shortly after they were married. Then along came two kids and a dog. Suddenly, their home—with its narrow hallways and small rooms—no longer suited their needs. With their love for the location and their neighbors, moving was not an option: they decided to renovate.

Architect Mason Kirby redesigned their space for gathering and individuality. The main floor was blown open to create a blended kitchen, dining and living space. Their kitchen took its rightful place as the heart of the home, beckoning the family to hang out around its extended island. The top floor became a space for rest and rejuvenation with a master suite, guest bedroom and bath. An underutilized low-level became a kids’ zone. This area housed the kids' bedrooms and bathroom, and provided direct access to the backyard.

A wide stairwell connects the levels. It is efficient in design, but also houses the family’s book collection and provides wide walls to showcase art.

Mom deserves credit for the her color selection of bright colors throughout the home. Her son notes that she picked out the very bright green of his bedroom and adores it.
