General design guidance for my first (very small, fixer upper) home

Hi houzz friends!
I'm about to close on my very first home and embark on a series of renovations. It's very exciting and also very overwhelming! I do not have any pictures yet, but will post as soon as I do. I've been looking for general guidance and tips for small spaces. I tend to gravitate toward fixtures, furniture, and colors that add character and warmth, but I'm afraid that I will go overboard and make my tiny beach cottage look cramped. Does anyone have any general advice on how to get started and where I should focus my efforts first? Any great resources?
Here are some of the questions I have been grappling with:
1) We need new floors throughout the house which we plan on putting in prior to moving in, yet, I find myself struggling over even this seemingly simple task. My husband wants tile throughout because he feels it is more durable if we encounter a flood (we're on the water), yet I'm drawn to what I consider to be warmer options like wood flooring.
2) The kitchen, living room, and dining room are essentially one, L shaped room. It's the biggest area in the house but I've been struggling over design ideas and how to make the most of this space. I will be purchasing furniture for the space, but starting with that completely blank slate also makes it feel all the more daunting, if that makes any sense.
3) We plan on renovating 2 bathrooms prior to moving in. One is currently serving as a bathroom/laundry room/pantry at the moment (don't ask). It is off of the kitchen and we plan on turning it into a small powder room. The other bathroom is as large as one of the bedrooms. We plan on turning this into a private, master bath.
4) The master bedroom is incredibly small- we are going to knock the wall down to the second bedroom and make it one large bedroom prior to moving in.
There are some other long term, aesthetic projects on the horizon but these are immediate. As you can see from this ramble of a post, I am extremely scattered and I don't even know where to begin.
Thanks in advance for any advice!
Carrie
