You know those 3M hooks that remove without leaving any damage to the wall? They have them like that only not hooks, but with velcro tabs. They are marketed as picture frame attachers. But I think you could use them without worrying that they would leave a residue on the carpet. You'd put some of them on the carpet and some of them on the runners, and then they snap together. You can separate the velcro tabs when you want to wash the runners. I don't think you'd have to remove them, but I'm not sure how the ones on the runners would do in the washing machine. You could always remove the velcro tabs by pulling the glue strip down and put fresh glue strips on the velcro strips on runners after washing. They are pretty cheap. They sell replacement glue strips separately so you could reuse the velcro parts.

Thanks, this is my first renovation and I think when I posted the question about it being dated I was just overwhelmed with all the choices I have been making. I'm doing two bathrooms, one kitchen, a dining room and a living room all at once! Its a lot. I lost sight of what I naturally like and want in my own home. We need to choose wall to wall carpet for condo about 1,500 ft. We have an off white mid century couch that has shades of grey and beige, 2 black Rosewood Eames Chairs and 2 white/silver based small mid century round tables and a walnut colored midcentury round dining table with 4 matching chairs that have a royal blue cloth seat. Our bedroom has a walnut platform bed with 2 small walnut night tables. The Study has a cherry table top desk, Light grey desk chair, and black Swedish designed leather chair

In my last home, I redid the floors on two levels to hardwood, and added area rugs. In my new, traditional 20 year old home, I removed the carpet from the both sets of stairs and the downstairs master and replaced it by continuing the hardwood throughout. I thought about continuing it on the upstairs level, and decided against it. We are both happy that we have the carpet upstairs. It add a level of comfort and probably muffles sound. Plus I like to sit and lay down on the carpet. Also, it is so hard coordinating rugs in all the rooms.
