Am thinking this rug to blend with painting? Suggestions welcome!

I don't think your rug works with the painting. The shape, material and color really go with something more traditional, and doesn't relate as well with the art as you might like. Joancuneos examples are really the direction to go, or if you want to complement in in a more subdued way and want to complement (go opposite) you could go with a natural sisal





Or a black natural weave

I'd stay with a rectangular rug or runner, rather than oval. (Oval rugs are tough to design with)

And keep 12" to 18" on each side of the rug floor space, from rug to wall.

Great art! You could also go with a classic oriental that picks up the same colors. It works to mix the styles as long as the colors work. Does also depend on the rest of the house too!

Do you own your place? Is that black counter top? I have a thing for black doors, but with the brown molding it might mean painting the moldings white or black.





An easier way to go might be to paint the door the same color of the molding, so it doesn't stand out so much, and it does appear that there is some brown in the art...

I'm wondering if a simple bench, that is a bit airier, or organic, or unusual might really complement the art and entry



This one is a bit long, but the pattern is nice and keeps storage hidden



And this tufted one with the metal legs have a nice mix of modern and traditional and is airy, and could accomodate baskets underneath. This example is also too long. But just to show another nice counterpoint to the art.

Jhx1 Yes on door!! Yes on black counters! I am going to look for diamond sisal rug! Love it! Would I do the same rug for kitchen area to tie together? And hall?

@Joancuneo, I like your rugs! For the kitchen area I was thinking a 4 x 4 or 5 x 5 circle, since it's a relatively larger area?? I am learning so much..........apparently I don't know much! LOL I need to measure the inside area........and then a runner for the hallway! SO, one for the entryway, one for the hallway, and one for the kitchen.......tieing it all together????

FYI: we are going to remove the bench..........we like it without! AND I was thinking of a plant by the doorway, plus painting the wall or door...........not sure how all this is to be coordinated with the rug suggestions! Getting the pieces..........just not sure how to put it together for an overall look! :) #feelingoverwhelmed!

I think that three would be too much of a good thing :) You just want a rug to compliment your painting and to add some color to the floor, so too many would just take away from that beautiful painting.

The lovely painting is too large for such a small entry. Will it fit where the starburst mirror is? Guests will be better able to appreciated it from the entry there. Also think in a 5x5 space you only have room for a "glorified" doormat. You want at least 12-18" of floor space all around a rug. I'd get a nice plain, non-distracting, doormat for the door area. Then go for runner to pick up on the art colors - both in the stairwell area. You can't go wrong with a pretty oriental rug on nice hardwood floors. I might suggest some new lighting if I could clearly see what you have right now. Care to post a couple of additional pix?

I liike the painting there in this space - must disagree w/ decoe here on that, but I do think a runner is a great idea. My suggestion is to paint the back of your entry door - - now I'm reading back and see that I'm agreeing with jhx1! I guess I LIKE TOO MANY IDEAS and was having a hard time narrowing the suggestions, but these two comments help put it together!! AND a brown-black would be nice!! I wasn't liking the black for a door and the darkness of the painting, almost felt like it would have been too harsh! #feelingsomewhatrelieved

@libradesigneye, do you have suggestions for rugs? One small one for the entry and another coordinating one for the hallway? :) I am going to use your brown for the door!:)

Your rugs do not have to match-just relate to each other and the surroundings. I think I'd not go with a round rug. Ovals and round rugs are tough to integrate. And matching rugs look so much like a set that you stop seeing them.

Can you go with a hall runner that goes the length of the hall and entry? If you need a custom length, Flor has some diamond sisal like tiles...

Then you might go with one of the other suggested rugs for in the kitchen.

Or vice a versa. A Persian style runner in the hall (with the colors from the painting) and a woven natural in the kitchen for instance.

Custom sizing that flor allows might really work well. A square rug in the kitchen, or even just a runner along the sink side of the cabinets...

I would watch out for going too contemporary with the rug, given the art.

I have trouble with this and have made mistakes which of course my husband reminds me! :-) I am more traditional.....love sisal, pots, natural...........the art was done by a close friend of my mothers so it has meaning..........THANK YOU for your time!

@mponton it's fun to help! Don't worry about being overwhelmed! I have a degree in design and it's still complicated. I hope your husband isn't too hard on you. Professionals have training and resources (and samples!) but it still takes them time to come up with a design. And it takes them time and experience to integrate their training and craft.

I don't think non designers should beat themselves up, or be criticized. Because there are so many elements to balance in any design.

I think it's really great to have resources these days like houzz for people to go and ask questions, and get help until they have a plan they really like. :) and it can help from purchasing things you regret later. I think.

I hope your husband will give you some slack! Designers go to school for a long time to learn all this! A few mistakes are normal for everyone :)
