Vent baffle flapping loudly in wind
Comments (7)I have exactly the same problem - my vent cap is on the side of the house that gets some pretty strong winds straight off Lake Erie. I have not started using the hood yet and this was something I was going to investigate. antss - thank you for the advice! So, where do I get lead tape and how does it attach? Also, what is "sparingly" - do I just turn the hood on and make sure the damper still opens as much as before? Thanks in advance....See MoreVent hoods that don't have to be vented outside? do they exist?
Comments (20)Your situation regarding a vent hood mirrors exactly what we had to deal with. Load bearing wall, finished upstairs bathroom, all the plumbing for the bathroom was exactly where we thought we could run the duct work for the vent hood and 8' ceilings. What we did was run 3X10 duct work above the 36" cabinets, vented horizontally to the outside and then covered up the duct work with moldings. We did have to drop the vent hood from 30" above the stove to 27". I was worried about having the vent hood 27" above the stove, but we were in the parameters of what the installation instructions required. The only thing I would have changed was to have a 9" vent hood instead of an 18" vent hood, then I could have had the vent hood 30" above the range, but you know what, it works like a champ. My vent hood is extremely quiet on low and medium low, but does get louder on med high and high. Whatever you choose to do, good luck. I always tell my DH, if they can put a man on the moon, then something is always doable, with some thought, and a woman!!!! Here is a picture of our install. Comments (6)I only saw one Ventahood where I could try to figure out if the cleaning or the more raw underside would bother me, and it was not connected to power so I don't know about their sound level. I've heard they are quieter and I've heard they are louder. I think the looks of the cages vs baffles would be more of an issue for me. While I was trying to decide whether that was a bit "raw" looking, I was led to a guy at the place where I bought my appliances who said he'd seen and heard both side by side. He said the Best by Broan was better for sound and operation, so I went with it. Very scientific, huh? Unfortunately, buying a vent is like that. I have a 1200 cfm model with an external blower and got the baffles. The blower sits just above my sink on the opposite side of my kitchen (better than the toilet or shower straight above --LOL) and it is quiet when you are outside. I'm not sure that in my set up the remote blower made that much difference. If I'd have another inch or two, I'd have been able to put in a silencer. Most of the time, I run the vent on the lowest setting or up to about 1/3 power -- rarely over 1/2. At that level, the fan on my ovens is as loud. You barely hear it away from the vent, but you will standing right under it. At full power, you will hear it, but even then it is not as loud as the ineffective downdraft my last cooktop had -- with only one speed. If you turn it on when you first start cooking and run it higher for things like fish, popcorn, bacon, you will not smell them all over the house. I made 120 bags of popcorn, both on the stovetop and in the microwave (bags opened under the vent)one afternoon. I delivered them to the school, came home and could not smell any popcorn. Maybe it could be more perfect, but I'm happy with my choice....See MoreTrade winds best hood grease collection
Comments (9)It's been a while since my hood research, but I think Trade Winds has a good reputation. They are the split off another reputable company with decent designs, as I recall, and offer fairly good pricing. I don't know about the grease cleaning specifically, but I will say that you should avoid Vent-A-Hood if you have a concern about cleaning--warning that a lot of VAH owners are passionate about their hoods and will say that they have no problem cleaning, but others have reviewed this brand as a difficult-to-clean system. I just purchased a Wolf hood for my remodel, and they get fairly good reviews for functionality and easy-to-clean baffles. I wouldn't put any baffles in a dishwasher just due to the risk of wearing off the finish on an expensive product. Hand-washing with a degreasing dish detergent will prolong the life of any baffles. I might ask what you are cooking that creates a lot of grease? Is there any chance you could move to more of an outdoor grilling situation for some of the messiest meats or an outdoor fryer if you're doing fried foods? At some point if you're creating a lot of heavy grease that is going to build up in your ducting beyond the hood, and you wouldn't be able to clean that at all. Some people have been known to move to the commercial brands if they are avid cooks and do a lot of heavy-duty cooking that creates grease, like frying french fries at home....See MoreUser
