The solenoid is on top of your electric valve. If its a new install you probably have something wired wrong. You can test the solenoid with an OHM meter and if it reads between 20-50 with the power off the solenoid is fine.

Sorry, scully, but I can't give you a brand name for nitrogen. It just doesn't work that way. There are many different brands of garden products. Most brands sell more than one different fertilizer formula. (And sometimes they change formulas from year to year, just to keep gardeners guessing ... and frustrated.) A fertilizer label may or may not state which plant(s) it's designed for (tomatoes, roses, etc.). What's more important are the numbers. They stand for: Nitrogen (N) - Phosphorus (P) - Potassium (K) Now please follow this link to read the last part of this FAQ (beginning with "What is N-P-K?"). http://faq.gardenweb.com/faq/lists/seed/2003022922010500.html It's important to know that if you have too much nitrogen, you'll have huge green plants, but no tomatoes. Trace elements are important too, but unless you have particularly bad soil, your biggest problem is that too much water can create a shortage of one mineral or another. So if you've had heavy rain and the leaves are looking yellowish, it's probably a good idea to fertilize. And if you're growing in containers, you'll need to fertilize much more often (that's also water-related). Besides too much water or a shortage or nitrogen, yellowing tomato leaves can also indicate a shortage of iron or many other minerals.
