poll: your favorite nectar plant
Comments (29)DOes anyone have good luck with other verbenas? I just bought some of the lower growing (groundcover type) that are like 1940's lipstick red! I sure hope they work, too. I also got a lantana 'Irene', which is a multi-color lantana as well. Anyone try that one? I am trying to attract hummers, too, so maybe the salvia I got (pink friesland) will attract them as well. I know the Texas salvia (pink/white) is beloved by the sulphurs for sure. They headed straight for it. These were orange sulphurs. The Cloudless Sulphurs liked the red hibiscus best. So sometimes it depends on the butterfly species, which nectar plant they like the best. Linda, my asclepias curassavica bloomed continuously, but then, as you might recall, it is located between those two pine trees, so got some relief from that hot, hot west sun last year. Maybe that helped? Can you give me the species name for blackfoot daisies? I planted a patch of 25 liatris spicata bulbs, so hope that helps. The red hibiscus coccineus is not too far away; my sunflowers have reseeded, and I have been pinching them back so they will be fuller this year; and I planted my sasafrass tree out there, too. It hasn't died yet, BTW, stem still is green. I think I'll put the ironweed out there, too, since it is only a 3-footer. No one mentioned button bush (cephalanthus occidentalis), which I thought was supposed to be a great nectar plant. I'm trying it for the first time this year. Comments (20)Well, since gardenias are not allowed, and they're practically impossible indoors anyway. I would say Jasmine Sambac 'Maid of Orleans' if I still lived where I had lots of big sunny windows, but don't have good indoor lighting anymore. All my windows face awful directions. So I'm going to suggest a very unusual one that fulfills all the requirements: Persian Violet (Exacum Affine). The fragrance is very nice but subtle, elusive, strongest in the morning hours when it is sometimes even detectable from a distance. The plant is pretty, easy to care for, seems to love it indoors, and blooms effortlessly....See MoreWhat is your favorite and least favorite flower to grow?
Comments (9)mla20fus, my favorite flowers are perennials, so I don't have to plant them every year. I also love Holihocks, (sorry, every plant needs loved by someone :),especially by an old outhouse or shed. I plant very few annuals, but I truely love breadseed poppy, especially the bright red ones. They bloom with the Shasta Daisy and really make a show. The daisies were all volunteer, but now that I know how they look with my poppies, they can stay. I also plant gypsoia (sp?) and moss rose every year, they too are worth the effort. Are your fall Asters the deep purple ones?...See MorePoll, Your favorite 'white' for cabinets
