I like the way it's shaping up, and have to agree with RHome on her concerns. - If the rounded ends look good with your house, they do offer a nice seating option -- but then do them on both ends (which would really complicate your trash). If rounded ends aren't right for the house, don't do them at all. - I have a raised seating area and love it -- but I also have reasons for it that don't apply in your case. Mine separates the cooking area from the visiting area, protects the cooktop, and also acts as a buffet zone when we're entertaining. In your case, it would cut out useful prep space; in mine, it doesn't. Plus, my island is HUGE and needed to be broken up. Yours is very nicely proportioned and IMO, should be kept symmetrical since everything else is. - Because of the symmetry issue, I'd be inclined to agree with RHome about your sink(s), and maybe go with one like the lower soapstone one I posted. It'll also be cheaper and easier to fabricate. And a deep sink really CAN hide stuff! (That was one of the unexpected bonuses I discovered that I have really come to love.) - I've found that when the time comes to eat, most of the mess is around the range, since prep mess can be easily tidied as you go without messing with your timing. And a range mess will be partially hidden by your doorway. But since you're concerned about hiding a messy kitchen, and have an extra thick wall there anyway, what about putting back the pocket doors? We have a pair separating our dining area from the TV room, and in the right setting - which I think you have - they can provide the perfect sense of separation with openness. And you know, you can use 'regular' doors with a pocket application -- you aren't stuck with those flimsy ones you so often see.

Our pantry was like that in our last house. Originally the kitchen had a maid's room (don't know where she was, ha ha). As with any legal bedroom, it had a closet. We used that original closet door for the pantry when we enlarged/remodeled. The pantry was about the size you describe. We had shelving across the back that was deeper, probably about 12 inches. Adjustable, so we had boxes like crackers and 12 packs of sodas and such. Along one wall, we had shallower shelves, maybe 6 inches wide, for canned goods and salad dressing, etc. Had a lip on these shelves with trim so things stayed on the shelves easily. On the other wall had hooks for broom, dustpan, swiffer. Had a power outlet in it so we could plug in the rechargeable vac. Had a $40 chrome 3 shelved cart from target that wheeled in and out through the door. Kept the mixer on it, with the baking stuff. This allowed the kids when younger to wheel the mixer over to the island and use it right on the cart. Had a hook on the backside of the door for my stepladder. And, best feature was the automatic light switch (like the refrigerator) that turned on the light if the door was opened, and turned off the light if the door was closed.

oldbat2be I don't think a pocket door will work, but also I prefer being able to use the back of the door for a spice rack. Stan Z, good point about future furnace replacement. It's in good shape (we had it inspected recently), but you never know. In the pre-demo layout, there was already two 32" doors between the furnace and main area. The door closest to the furnace is a louvered bifold. The other door was between laundry and wet bar, we've removed that and are putting in a door instead between wet bar and new kitchen, which is along the 90" wall. You can get a rough idea of the new kitchen layout - it'll go pantry door, then refrigerator, then induction stove top, then wall oven/microwave across the 90" wall. With an island across from it with sink and dishwasher. But I think you mean keep the pantry side of the 90" wall free, in case we have to remove the furnace in the future? That was my thought as well -- I am thinking just put in hooks there for hanging mops and brooms. Thanks for the recommendation for the 65" wall. I was thinking deeper shelves on bottom (15-18 inch?) then 12 inch shelves higher up (for canned goods). Or would you go 15-18 inch for all the shelves? Does anyone know of an online closet/pantry design site where I can play around with the layout? Most of the ones I've found won't allow you to design an odd-shaped pantry like this.

I have a ~30" wide pantry with double doors and rollouts. The rollouts always bang the doors because they don't get open or shut all the way (kids/spouse--I am perfect). My cabinet guy put nice walnut fronts on them so I feel bad seeing them scuffed. If things are put where they should be put, and I know where that is, I can find them without pulling out each rollout. I usually have to pull out at least 2 of the 3. The narrow pullout is easy to find things in and I can (usually) see everything in it at once. I only need to hunt on the other side when things are loaded incorrectly (kids/spouse--I am perfect). I checked and the actual inside storage is only 12" on mine--less than I thought! The shelves are adjustable. I don't think my rollouts are. And of course my pullout is 30" deep while my rollouts are only 24" deep. My setup is very much like Mayflowers (I might have copied it!) with a rollout on the cabinet above the pullout (and over the fridge). It's way over my head but great for paper towels.
