Yes, heartwarming, but I believe it's AI.

Yes, it says in the caption it's AI. Hard to tell what's real anymore.

What first caught my eyes was mama elephant- she just stood there!

    Not hard to tell usually.

You would agree this is AI generated?

That could have been taken with a Brownie film camera.

What tips you off that it is AI? I need to learn how to spot these things.

Brownie camera - remind me of yesteryears! But it was 100% AI generated (via Google Gemini) by me. See, it’s not always easy to tell what is real or not.

For me, the behavior of mama elephant is not normal- she should be down in the water stomping on the croc.

I’m sure Jane Goodall could take one look at that gorilla and tell it’s AI.

In a lot of the videos that come up on my feed, kids and kitties both, the easiest tell sometimes is the sound. Unnatural cat meows, a voice narrating that is saying insipid things, posted by an entity that is obviously not an individual - not a real sounding personal name like it would be of someone posting their pet or kid.

facebook "reels" seem to have been pretty much taken over by AI. the past few days, there have been dozens of fake videos showing a mare giving birth to a foal on an operating room table wherein the foal instantly jumps to its feet and prances around the room. it's almost like people are trying to outdo each other with the ridiculousness of it. as if the very concept of that scenario isn't bad enough, oftentimes the foal has an extra leg or 2 tails. 🙄

something else i find pretty amazing is the number of people whose comments seem to indicate that they think things like the above mare/foal scenario actually happen in real life.

AI is getting better - some of the best programs make things look absolutely real and aren't easily detectable. Facebook reels are made by armatures and much more easily detectable.

Either way, I still like the sentiment of this video. True or not, isn't it a beautiful thought that a gorilla would help a baby elephant being attacked by an alligator. This thinking would help humanity - we can help rather than attack.

I like the sentiment, so I posted it here, even though I have conflicting thoughts about the use of AI. On the darker side, realistic and convincing AI-generated videos or images can spread misinformation like wildfire. Even when used with good intentions, the use of AI to stretch or manipulate the truth raises important ethical questions. If AI is used to exaggerate a message, alter reality, or present misleading visuals, it can still influence people’s perceptions and decisions in ways that may not be fair or honest. What might start as an attempt to make a point more persuasive could quickly cross the line into misinformation.

While it is a beautiful thought, further thought can sprout forth complexities. Depriving the alligator of this cute baby is heartwarming, but depriving the alligator of all prey doesn't seem fair. Carnivores are part of the whole setup, and there is a complex balance, without their part, other species might proliferate, and wipe out plant species by eating them.

    As always: Consider the source.

That said, there certainly are cases of interspecies altruism, usually with animals that are known to have higher intelligence like primates, dogs, cats, dolphins, etc. https://www.psychologytoday.com/ca/blog/goodness-sake/201610/animal-altruism

There are some Youtube videos of apparent altruism as well, but look for videos that are older than a couple of years.

It's as if some of you have joined a crowd frantically running down the street until it dawns on you that you're not sure what you're running from.

The use of artificial intelligence for image creation and manipulation is a trivial application, creates nothing new, and is a misleading part of its uses that seem to lead the general public astray. It's much more, much more important. It's uses are far more exciting and essential.

Does anyone remember photos nearly 100 years ago from totalitarian countries in which certain people no longer in favor were removed from a group shot? And sometimes others artificially added? How about scenes in the Forest Gump movie over 30 years ago that showed Gump meeting JFK and another with John Lennon. Or getting the Medal of Honor.

Image and video altering techniques have been around for a long, long time. The tasks may be easier with the new software but the outcomes are nothing new.

I agree with TV above - consider the source. Facebook can be a bubbling swamp of misinformation, inhabited by phonies and cons. Give everything a mental double check before you start to run down the street.

this happened in chicago in 1996.

    That was very sweet.

In 2016 we had a different outcome here at our zoo. A child went beyond the barrier for the gorilla habitat and fell into the moat that had some but certainly not deep water. Harambe, a western lowland gorilla, picked up the boy and proceeded to swing him around. The child was screaming and the keepers shot and killed Harambe. He was a zoo favorite and it was a cause for much discussion about the parent of the child that survived the ordeal and the lack of attention being paid at the time.

I'm glad your story had a happy ending.

i remember that story and the uproar it caused. what a terrible and sad ending for an animal that i, for one, put ZERO blame on for this incident.
