Can a tire that has/s a nail punture in this approximate location be salvaled? see photo’

Tire similar, I guess. Tires newish. The tire in photo below is someone else’s tire.

Weeks ago, DH took SUV to dealer and dealer said that the rear tire had a nail in it and, according to dealer, that location was not conducive to a safe secure patch. He said DH needed a new tire. And actually, TWO new matching tires because with ABS and all whheel drive, the tires had to be matched and balanced. $$$ So, DH bought two new matching tires.

Meanwhile a friend (lives 60 miles away) said, Bunk.

DH has had the nail hole tire and its mate in the back of the SUV for 6 weeks and I am ready to cook them for his dinner. I want a decision made. Toss or Keep, Sell or give away. (Why don’t I have a second to myself? grrrr)

I'd ask some place else. You can always get a plug in it and if it develops a slow leak, then you know the patch didn't work.

That’s the shoulder and you’re not supposed to plug that or the sidewall. I’m pretty sure I’ve had it done, and I never had issues with a plug, but they’re not wrong to say no.

While I think that the "FAQ" as outlined by swanoir was presented tongue in cheek ('the humus'), many of the subsequent comments and/or links to threads that could/should be included in a FAQ were presented in a more serious tone. And maybe they do make sense as a foundation to a real LD forum FAQ. But I've also sensed something else in these comments that may contribute to the apparent lack of communication between new posters seeking advice and those that regularly frequent this forum and offer it. And that is that the long checklist provided by Miss R must be (or should be) answered in detail before posting. Well, of course not! But it is definitely something worth reviewing and giving some thought to. This checklist, or something very similar, is what most designers utilize when first meeting with a prospective client. It gives them a feeling for what the client wants to do with the property, how they intend to use it, what they hope to get out of it and how much effort (time/$$) are they are intending to put into it. Hopefully, reviewing an outline or checklist such as this could help to refine and focus some of those blank slate questions and even educate those new posters totally unfamiliar with the process the degree of complexity, the number of variables and exactly what is involved in the formulation of a landscape design. Even DIY landscape texts intended for the homeowner with no previous design or landscaping experience offer similar checklists to get one started thinking about the process. Obviously, this is overkill for those questions that are more issue-specific, but I think very appropriate for those that are much broader and far less focused.

Thank you, ncrescue, that is exactly what I have here. I have a good sized patch of it out back by the fence and I've seen it in several other places here too. I knew it had to be natural as nobody has ever lived on this land but us, it was used to store junk and equipment from a construction company for a good 20 years. Right beside the fence is a hay field with no close neighbors. I did have a large patch that was filled with creamy and pinkish colored lady slippers but while we were moving the house in, the workers parked their trucks and equipment on them and they have never came back. Now I just find them scattered here and there. Thanks, cynandjon, for the advice on the bulbs and good luck with restoring your woods :) Esh, why do you think the ice storm didn't kill the laurels? There is a whole section that are dead, not just pruned, and they have nothing growing from their roots. What are you thinking there? We just assumed it was the ice storm. I've left most of them standing and piled brush up next to the fence where the neighbors cows like to come wandering through. Thanks!!

A few responses to your reflection (yeah, it took me a few minutes to figure out what a "relection" was, but I'm not criticizing because I have many figuretip-brain misfires.) First off, Garden Writer's Forum may be more correct, because it sure seems like there's never more than one of us around at a time. If this is meant to be a forum for many garden writers, then "writers'" is the correct form. Second, as to your garden question, garden web hosts many forums on many topics. Click on the "Other Forums" caption up near the top of the page and you can see the whole list. Your post on the cucomber beetle may be more appropriate on a vegetable gardening forum. Last, even though you said it wasn't needed, welcome! Hope you hang around a bit and add some life here.

It sounds like you have several issues: A) Squeeks B) Cold Floors C) Concern about floor level differences Regarding A, the builder is basically correct - 3/4 OSB is a building standard now. It is tongue and groove and glued down and together. Over time is will begin to squeek. You know where the squeeks are and when removing existing flooring, nail the subfloor tight again. Should eliminate, or at least reduce the squeek. Regarding B, See if you can have foam insulation injected into the cantilevered space. As to heating, it still may be necessary but why not minimize its burden by controlling the root cause. Regarding C, Several things here. Your current vinyl should be installed on a thin underlayment. Combined they are about 1/4" thick. It will be necessary to remove these. (This will be the time to inject foam insulation) A tile floor needs 1.25" minimum structural support which means a 1/2" thickness of concrete board will be cemented and screwed atop the existing subfloor. Then your heating mat followed by tile. So, you'll be gaining about 3/4" above the current level. Your tile shop will have a marble threshold with a beveled edge to minimize this effect. We have this same situation is our home and it is negligable. You may or may not have to trim the door. Base trim would be removed in the bath to do this work. It can then be reinstalled, replaced or have the tile setter install tile as base trim - that's what we did. I was a tire salesperson for 9 years, putting myself through college with no tuition loans. A plug patch with glue will hold...a cold patch will NOT. It's very close to the sidewall....a lot of places won't patch a tire like that at all. If it doesn't hold, it's NOT dangerous...they just don't want to warranty their work.....hence they sold you two new tires. That's par for the industry.

Thanks for the great responses. I understood why the dealer did not want to plug / patch the tire.

Good feedback from experience, nicole. If the intact one is better than the current spare, we might keep. Else they are both going someplace. I don’t want to store them.

I agree with the prior comments that repairing a hole near the edge of the tread is not a good idea. And is never recommended by a tire shop with integrity. Because of the possibility (actually likelihood) that the sidewall strength and thus the safety of the tire may be compromised.

Over the years, with a good start from several years of auto shop in high school and many years of owning multiple cars at a time running 10k+ miles per year , I'm of the view that trying to save money with ill-advised shortcuts or delays is a bad idea for the following:

1- periodic oil changes, not following the manufacturer's recommended intervals

2- brakes when worn

3- tires when replacement is advised

Broken parts of course need to be replaced when discovered. Especially frame and support ones.

Of the list of three, not doing the first one will hasten the death of the engine. Delaying either of the second two may hasten the death of the driver.

Agree with Elmer. The most important thing on a car is brakes. The second-most important is tires.

I wouldn't patch that tire. I'd buy at least two when you replace that one - ideally, four.

Yes, definitely agree with Elmer and Offie. Motor oil is cheap, Very important to keep oil changed. Ditto with tires and brakes. We will toss the tires or put the one good one into the older SUV we are donating
